In January 2023, I proudly opened the doors to my captivating showroom, inviting visitors to explore my exquisite rug collection.
Introduction
Hello, dear readers! I'm Nargis, the proud owner of The Rug Mine, a local handmade rug shop based in Vista, California, in the heart of San Diego County. As an Afghan woman born in Afghanistan, I have always been passionate about the rich heritage and artistry of luxury handmade rugs. I am delighted to share with you the fascinating history of these exquisite rugs in San Diego and how my own journey has woven me into this rich tapestry. Let me guide you through the unique features and qualities of various types of rugs, such as Persian, Turkish, and Moroccan rugs, and introduce you to my very own collection of handmade Afghan rugs.
The History of Oriental Rugs in San Diego
Oriental rugs have held a special place in the hearts of San Diego residents for many years, dating back to the early 19th century when international trade and cultural exchange began to flourish. San Diego, being a coastal city, has long been a melting pot of cultures and artistic styles, making it a natural home for these captivating handmade rugs. You may have encountered these exquisite rugs adorning the interiors of iconic San Diego landmarks, such as the Hotel Del Coronado, Point Loma Lighthouse, Balboa Park, Mission San Diego De Alcala, La Casa de Estudillo, and the Whaley House in Old Town, to name just a few!

Throughout the years, various rug dealers and collectors have established businesses in the city, catering to the growing demand for these beautiful works of art. You might have seen these businesses in Hillcrest, North Park, La Jolla, or Carlsbad. You might have even seen them at local farmers markets and swap meets, like Kobey's Swap Meet. A cherished family legacy, my father-in-law, an Afghan refugee, is a beloved figure among San Diegans and local interior designers, as he spent over 35 years selling vintage Afghan rugs at Kobey's Swap Meet (in Point Loma), endearing himself to the community with his passion and expertise.
Embracing a new beginning, my father-in-law arrived in San Diego as a refugee in 1981, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The locals have always admired his infectious passion and extensive knowledge of handmade Afghan and Persian rugs, which he generously shares with everyone he meets.
These hand-knotted rugs are cherished for their intricate designs, rich colors, and exceptional craftsmanship, which have captivated rug enthusiasts in San Diego and beyond. They are made using traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations, making each rug a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The cultural heritage and artistry woven into every rug have made them a popular choice among interior designers and homeowners alike, adding a touch of history and sophistication to any space.

As the owner of The Rug Mine, I am thrilled to offer the San Diego community a unique collection of handmade Afghan rugs that are just as exquisite and captivating as their Persian, Turkish, and Moroccan counterparts. I was just one of many in America today who watched your story on CBS Sunday Morning, Nargis. I want to commend you for helping these Afghan women and their families with your Rug Mine business. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of these girls only getting to go to school until 6th grade. How cruel! And Adult women confined to their homes to work. May God take pity on the Unmarried ladies you described who have even more unfortunate circumstances. I hope today’s CBS feature on you and your business brings a flood of new orders. 🙂👍 Human Rights/ Women’s Rights in Afghanistan are in dire need of change for the Better. It’s far more than a narrow minded/ misogynistic Religious Zealots issue of " Independence ". This is 2024. The barbarian way of thinking is not acceptable. Afghanistan needs join the World Community. Only Progress that’s Humane will achieve this. Bless you, Nargis. And sincere Thanks!
